In a country that has become the focus of national and international headlines, South Africa’s first black cricket team, the South African Lions, is getting ready to take to the field in India for a first Test in India in 2018.
As the Lions, who have been fielding a limited-overs team for the past two seasons, prepare to play their first Test match in India, they’ve already taken a big step forward in their game.
The team has already secured a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
The Lions, one of the biggest clubs in the country, are also set to play a World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh in December.
India has been known to be a hard-core cricketing country, and the Lions are hoping to continue that trend, even if they aren’t part of the big four teams that are playing the World T20 next year.
South Africa has been part of World Cup semi-finals since 2005 and the team was in contention for the final in 2012.
The team, though, lost out to the India team in the semi-final and was eliminated by the hosts.
India, meanwhile, has been a consistent contender in the recent World Cup tournaments.
India is expected to qualify for the 2019 World Cup after finishing fifth in the world standings last year.
India is expected as the host nation for the next World Cup and has a record of winning three consecutive World Cups since the tournament started in 1998.
